Tutorial part 5. Ad Group Template

Creating a Ad group template

This part will explain and show you how to create an ad group template and connect it to your campaign template. As in the last part of the tutorial we will start off by explaining the different available options and then give you an example of how a template could look.

  • Template name same as previous, this is where you set the name of the template.
  • Template Status is where you set the status, only active templates will generate ad groups.
  • Campaign template This is where you specify which campaign template the ad group template belongs to. Choose which campaign template to use here.
  • Ad group template structure
    • Make one ad group Creates one ad group
    • Make one ad group for every... This option will allow you to create one ad group for each stated criteria. E.g. if you choose to make one ad group for each SKU it will create one ad group for every product in the feed.
    • Include all items will not filter out any products
    • Include items with: This is the filtering option, if you want to filter out say, items with prices lower than 5000 SEK the right configuration for that would be: "Include items with priceWithTax (SEK) greater than 5000"
  • Ad group properties
    • Ad group name this is where you set the name of the ad group(s), using the dynamic expression ${sku} sets the sku number of each product as ad group name.
    • Industry code could be hardcoded here or extracted from the feed using the ${unspscCode} expression.
    • Default ad parameter 1 & 2 This is where you set the default value that you want manually added ad groups to inherit, this could be $priceWithTax for example.
    • Default dest URL As above this is where you set the default URL that you want your manually added ad groups to inherit.
    • Initial default search bid Sets the initial default search bid.
  • Status box
    • Ad group should be active Sets the ad group to active
    • Ad group should be inactive Sets the ad group to inactive
    • Ad group should be active when Sets the status of the ad group to be active when specified criterias are met. E.g. Ad group should be active when Category equal to Computer, will set only the category equal to computer as active, all others will be inactive.
(Note that Active when option doesn't affect whether or not the ad group should be created only if it should be active or inactive depending on the set criteria/s).

Ad group template example

  • This is an example of an ad group template built for a electronics store. For this example we have chosen to set up a long tail campaign for computers, as you see in the picture below we've decided to set the campaign status to inactive, this is done because they already have a campaign running for these products but as manual campaigns.
A tip when creating RTA campaigns when there already exists manually made campaigns (that has been running for a while) is to start implementing the RTA campaigns one at a time in order to prevent damaging the already existing campaign statistics.
  • Another thing you might notice is the extension (?ceiling) we have added after $priceWithTax in Default parameter 1, this extension will round the number upwards, you can click here to read more about the different Freemarker built-ins. Besides those two things, we have not done anything notable.
  • So as you can see in the preview window this will generate 9 ad groups.
