Feed Basics

Feed Basics

For RealTime Ads to work you must have access to a listing of your current product and/or inventory data. This document is called a Product Feed. The document is an XML document with a structure defined by Keybroker so that the tools in RealTimeAds can parse and understand the information in the file. The XML document is validated against an XML specification called an XSD. This is done to ensure that the file has been correctly populated and that there won't be any nasty errors down the line. This XSD document also describes for a developer or data exporter how the data should be structured. The latest version of the feed definition are always available here

Feed Content

In order to create a successful RTA account you need to make sure that the feed contains sufficient information. This is the very first step before you start configuring templates. In order to make sure that the correct information is in the feed ask yourself the question "Based on the data in the feed, is it possible to generate structured campaigns, ad groups, keywords and ads?".

Some examples:

  • To create a long-tail campaign structure where each category represents a campaign you need to make sure that the feed contains products divided into categories
  • To include price in the ad text, make sure that price is in the feed for each product
  • To include a product url in each ad and/or each keyword, make sure the feed contains product urls

So, the necessary feed content depends on the requirements for each specific campaign setup and the campaign structure you wish to acheive. The only mandatory field is the unique product identifier "sku" which always needs to be included for each product/service/offering.

In general, for a basic&nbsplong-tail campaign, at least, the following attributes are needed:

  • sku
  • currency
  • category
  • sub category
  • description
  • model name
  • manufacturer
  • manufacturer product number
  • price with tax
  • quantity for sale
  • product url

For a generic campaign, at least, the following attributes are needed:

  • sku
  • currency
  • category
  • sub category
  • description
  • model name
  • manufacturer
  • manufacturer product number
  • price with tax
  • quantity for sale
  • product url
  • category url
  • sub category url

To create more complex / innovative campaigns, more attributes should be included and used
